Course Overview
This course equips participants with the skills to conduct formal periodic inspections of height safety equipment.
This course is designed for people with considerable experience and formal training in working at heights and in the use of height safety equipment. Without experience in how height safety equipment is used, it is difficult to have a clear understanding of the wear and faults that may appear in the equipment.
Course Outline
The key areas covered by this course include:
- Legislative requirements and Australian Standards for managing equipment inspection
- The importance of equipment inspection
- When to carry out formal periodic inspections
- How to prepare to inspect equipment
- How to systematically inspect and test equipment, including
- Harnesses
- Connectors
- Lanyards
- Fall arrest devices
- Ropes
- Helmets
- How to identify faults, damage and wear
- Common equipment failures across equipment categories
- Documenting inspection results
- Identifying required actions to address equipment that fails and passes inspection
- Procedures for tagging fault or damaged equipment out of service
- How to clean and store equipment in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions
Practical Assessment Tasks
This course requires participants to demonstrate the ability to inspect, clean, and store a harness. Participants are required to provide video evidence of these activities being undertaken in a simulated workplace environment. Participants must have access to a suitable harness and video recording equipment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Who can inspect height safety equipment?
A: Due to the risks associated with using height safety equipment, this equipment should be inspected by a person who is familiar with the use of the equipment they are inspecting and can identify when the equipment needs to be removed from service.
Q: What type of equipment does this course teach me to inspect?
A: This course outlines how to conduct periodic inspections of the following height safety equipment:
- Harnesses, including webbing, stitching, buckles and D-rings
- Connectors such as carabiners, snap hooks, scaff hooks and mallions
- Lanyards and shock absorbers
- Type 1, 2 and 3 fall arrest devices
- Wire and Textile ropes
- Helmets
This course does not include the inspection of anchors and other specialised height safety systems.
Q: Is this a “Test and Tag” course?
A: No. The term “Test and Tag” relates to electrical equipment. In this course, you will learn how to inspect height safety equipment and apply an approved inspection tag if the equipment is safe for use.
Q: Is this course a manufacturer-approved course?
A: No. Some manufacturers offer training courses to certify individuals to conduct testing, inspection and maintenance on certain pieces of proprietary equipment. If required, these courses should be taken in addition to this course.
Q: What certification will I get out of this course?
A: You will receive a statement of attainment that confirms you have attained competency against the nationally recognised unit of competency PUAEQU001 - Prepare, maintain and test response equipment.

Raymond the trainer spoke very clearly (important) and was obviously very knowledgeable about confined space. He highlighted practical applications and really got the “personal safety” message across to the group. I have done these courses before, however I got more out of this due to the “SKILL” of the trainer to get the critical messages across.
The practical exercises were helpful in executing all the theory we had learnt during the morning session. Having three practical exercises is a good strategy as I was able to gain something from each one confined space entry (mistakes I made plus observing others under a little pressure).
A good one-day course which I would recommend.
