Students who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This certification is nationally recognised. The Statement is issued by Pinnacle Safety and Training (RTO 40496).

Pinnacle Safety and Training does not offer Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for this course. Due to the duration and cost of this short course, RPL assessment would have limited value to participants.

Course Outline

The Mining Supervisor course covers the following topics:

  • The role and responsibilities of supervisors
  • Safety culture and leadership in the workplace
  • Legislation relevant to the mining industry
  • Requirements of a safety and health management system
  • Consultation requirements and mechanisms
  • Verbal and written communication methods
  • Basic risk management – legislative requirements and processes
  • Legal requirements for responding to workplace incidents
  • Incident investigation, including techniques for gathering and analysing evidence
  • Reporting investigation findings and corrective actions

Mandatory Prerequisites

To enrol in this course, each participant must submit evidence of having obtained the following units of competency:

  • RIIRIS301E Apply Risk Management Processes or equivalent
  • RIIWHS301E Conduct safety and Health Investigations or equivalent
  • RIICOM301E Communicate Information or equivalent

The above prerequisites must be uploaded to your online learning platform.

Participants are expected to have experience in a supervisory role within the mining industry.

Who needs this training?

Mining staff in statutory positions need to have the appropriate skills and knowledge to perform their duties. The Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee and the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee determine the required competencies for statutory positions at coal mines and mineral mines and quarries.

The units of competency covered in this course are required for the following positions:

  • Supervisors
    • Supervisors on mines employing more than 10 persons and where the position is identified in the management structure as one whose duties include allocation of tasks to others
    • Other supervisors where directed by an inspector of mines
  • Site safety and health representative
    • These competencies are to be obtained within three months of appointment.

Refresher training is required every 5 years as per Reg. 84 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017 (Qld).

Computer Literacy

You will access, research, prepare and submit your assessments through the Learning Management System (LMS), Moodle.

You will require access to a computer for the duration of the course. The device must meet the minimum System Requirements of Pinnacle’s e-Learning system. We officially support and recommend modern desktop or laptop computers running Google Chrome web browser. You will also require word processing software - Microsoft Word is highly recommended.

This program is only recommended to those with a strong level of computer literacy.

Practical Assessment Tasks

To undertake the practical assessment tasks required to complete this course, you will need access to one (1) volunteer to participate in role play activities. During face-to-face and virtual training, this role will likely be played by another student. Online (self-paced) students will be required to source their own volunteers. This volunteer must be at least 15 years of age and consent to being video recorded for the purposes of assessment.

Each Participant Must

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have at least a Year 10 level of numeracy, literacy and communication skills
  • Have the ability to read and write English
  • Use a device that meets the minimum System Requirements of Pinnacle’s e-Learning system (we officially support and recommend modern desktop or laptop computers running Google Chrome web browser). Other personal devices (e.g. phones and tablets) may be compatible, but due to the variety available, we do not officially support these devices
  • Have a stable internet connection
  • Use a device that can play sound
