Course Overview

This course provides an introduction to privacy law in Australia, focusing on the Privacy Act 1988 and the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). Based on information provided by the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC), this course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge necessary to understand, implement, and manage privacy practices within their organisation.

Course Outline

  • Introduction to privacy - Participants will gain a foundational understanding of the Privacy Act, which regulates the handling of personal information in Australia. This section will cover the difference between personal information and sensitive information, explore the 13 Australian Privacy Principles and the key elements of consent.
  • Lawful handling of personal and sensitive information - Building on the legal framework, participants will learn about best practices for managing privacy within their organisation. This section will cover collecting, using and disclosing personal or sensitive information, notification requirements, practical techniques for keeping information secure and obligations for retaining and destroying information.
  • Privacy obligations and responsibilities - This section will cover the privacy obligations and responsibilities of individuals, organisations and government agencies. Participants will learn about the obligations of organisations and agencies to implement privacy governance frameworks, types of data breaches and addressing eligible data breaches in line with the Notifiable Data Breaches (NDB) scheme.

Each Participant Must

  • ​Have at least a Year 10 level of numeracy, literacy and communication skills
