Course Details

Certification

Participants who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment which is recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This certification is nationally recognised. The Statement is issued by Pinnacle Safety and Training (RTO 40496).

National units of competency:

  • BSBWHS414 - Contribute to WHS risk management
  • BSBWHS411 - Implement and monitor WHS policies, procedures and programs

Course Overview

This course covers key risk management concepts and techniques designed to equip learners with the skills and knowledge to identify, assess, control and monitor risks. Participants will learn to effectively consult with workers and stakeholders to implement and monitor workplace policies, procedures and programs to create a safe workplace.

Course Outline

This course will cover the following topics:

  • Legislation relevant to the mining industry
  • Mine Safety Management System (MSMS)
  • Requirements for training, consultation and incident response
  • Monitoring WHS compliance
  • Consultation duties, methods, benefits and barriers
  • The risk management process, including identifying hazards, assessing risks, applying controlling measures and monitoring and reviewing controls
  • Implementing and monitoring WHS policies and procedures
  • Reporting and record-keeping requirements

What are statutory positions?

Part 10.7A of the Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022 prescribes positions in relation to mines. These statutory positions are appointed by the mine operator to carry out specific functions in relation to the operations of a mine.

Statutory positions are classified into several categories, with different functions and obligations, and levels of knowledge, experience and formal qualifications for the appointed persons, with some positions requiring statutory certificates.

This course is designed to meet the WHS risk management training requirements for the following statutory positions:

  • Underground supervisor (non-coal)
  • Underground supervisor (coal)
  • Restricted quarry manager
  • Statutory supervisor
  • Mine air quality officer
  • Noise officer
  • Electrical supervisor

Note: This course is not specifically designed to prepare participants for their legislation examinations.

Course Inclusions

Computer Literacy

While in class (either in-person or via Virtual Classroom), you will access, research, prepare and submit your assessments through the Learning Management System (LMS), Moodle.

This program is only recommended to those with a strong level of computer literacy.

Bring Your Own IT Equipment

Mandatory

  • Participants must provide their own laptop computer (with wireless internet capabilities)

Optional but highly recommended

  • Wireless mouse and keyboard (improves ergonomics and speed)
  • A second screen/monitor (improves ability to perform research)

Virtual Classroom participants must also have a headset or headphones with a microphone (such as those supplied with mobile phones) compatible with their computer.

To be successful in this course you need to:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Have at least a Year 12 level of numeracy, literacy and communication skills
  • Have the ability to read and write English. If English is a second language, you will need to complete a language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) questionnaire. Contact us to discuss.
  • Provide your own laptop computer (with wireless internet capabilities) for the duration of the course
  • Use a device that meets the minimum System Requirements of Pinnacle’s e-Learning system (we officially support and recommend modern desktop or laptop computers running Google Chrome web browser).
  • Have a strong level of computer literacy skills. Your assignments will be completed on a computer, and if you do not have a suitable level of computer experience, you will not be able to complete the course in the timeframe allotted
  • Be confident navigating with web browsers
  • Have the skills to compile electronic documents using software applications (word processing)
  • Be able to conduct research and present information
  • Agree with all terms and conditions of your enrolment

For our public (face-to-face) courses at our purpose built training facility trainees must provide:

  • Transport
  • Lunch
  • Appropriate clothing, closed-in footwear
