Who needs this training?

Mining staff in statutory positions need to have the appropriate skills and knowledge to perform their duties. The Coal Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee and the Mining Safety and Health Advisory Committee determine the required competencies for statutory positions at coal mines and mineral mines and quarries.

The units of competency covered in this course are required for the following positions:

  • Supervisors
    • Supervisors on mines employing more than 10 persons and where the position is identified in the management structure as one whose duties include allocation of tasks to others, and
    • Other supervisors where directed by an inspector of mines
  • Site safety and health representative
    • These competencies are to be obtained within three months of appointment

For more information, see the Commissioner for Resources Safety and Health website.

Refresher training is required every 5 years as per Reg. 84 of the Coal Mining Safety and Health Regulation 2017 (Qld). See our Mining Supervisor Refresher course for more information and to book.

Computer Literacy

You will access, research, prepare and submit your assessments through Pinnacle’s Learning Management System (LMS).

You will require access to a computer for the duration of the course. The device must meet the minimum System Requirements of Pinnacle’s e-Learning system. We officially support and recommend modern desktop or laptop computers running Google Chrome web browser. You will also require word processing software - Microsoft Word is highly recommended.

This program is only recommended for those with a strong level of computer literacy.

Bring Your Own IT Equipment

Mandatory

  • Participants must provide their own laptop computer (with wireless internet capabilities)

Optional but highly recommended

  • Wireless mouse and keyboard (improves ergonomics and speed)
  • A second screen/monitor (improves ability to perform research)

Virtual Classroom participants must also have a headset or headphones with a microphone (such as those supplied with mobile phones) compatible with their computer.

Practical Assessment Tasks

To undertake the practical assessment tasks required to complete this course, you will need access to two (2) volunteers to participate in role-play activities. During face-to-face and virtual training, these roles will likely be played by other students. Online (self-paced) students will be required to source their own volunteers. These volunteers must be at least 15 years of age and consent to being video recorded for the purposes of assessment.

Other personal devices (e.g. phones and tablets) may be compatible, but due to the variety available, we do not officially support these devices
  • Have a stable internet connection
  • Use a device that can play sound

For our public (face-to-face) courses at our training facilities, trainees must provide:

  • Transport
  • Lunch
  • Long sleeves/pants and closed in footwear

The training was excellent - I learned a lot. The trainer encouraged participants to work at their own pace whenever possible, which was great (this is how I learn best).
