Course Overview

Asbestos-related disease has killed thousands of Australians. Australia and the UK have the highest rates of asbestos-related death in the world. Asbestos is highly toxic, causing a range of lung diseases that are slow to develop but in many cases deadly. While its use is now completely prohibited, there is a growing need to safely dispose of asbestos and asbestos containing material (ACM).

When asbestos containing materials (ACM) are present, or even suspected of being present in the workplace, only qualified personnel are permitted to safely manage or remove it. Any worker removing more than 10m² of non-friable (also known as ‘bonded’) asbestos must be appropriately trained, as outlined in the Work Health & Safety Regulation 2011 and the Code of Practice for the Safe Removal of Asbestos. Non-friable asbestos materials include asbestos cement sheeting, often called fibro, used in many buildings before 1990. The sheeting was used for cladding, roofs and fences and can often be found as backing boards in wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms.

Please note: Pinnacle Safety and Training will not use any asbestos containing material during this training program.

What is an RAL and do I need one?

In WA, a Restricted Asbestos Licence (RAL) is required to remove more than 10m² of non-friable asbestos. Only a licence holder, or employees of a licence holder may carry out this type of work. As such, an RAL can be awarded to a business entity or individual.

For business entities…

If the RAL applicant is a business entity, the applicant must have a ‘Nominated Supervisor’. The Nominated Supervisor must have completed this course, along with CPCCDE4008 - Supervise Asbestos Removal. The Nominated Supervisor must also demonstrate substantial and varied experience in planning and supervising the removal of non-friable asbestos. NB – the Nominated Supervisor does not have to hold an RAL.

For individuals…

Individuals not employed by an RAL holder wishing to remove more than 10m² of non-friable asbestos, need an RAL. These individuals must have completed this course, along with CPCCDE4008 - Supervise Asbestos Removal. They must also demonstrate substantial and varied experience in planning and supervising the removal of non-friable asbestos.

Details of the required evidence and licencing fees payable to Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety, please visit WorkSafe Western Australia.

What can I do once I complete this training?

In summary, this course is one of the requirements to:

  • Apply for an RAL as an individual, and/or
  • Act as a Nominated Supervisor for a business entity applying for an RAL.

Course Outline

This training course is very hands on with at least 50% of the time allotted to the practical aspects of operating in an asbestos worksite.

Topics covered in this course include:

  • Legislation and recent changes
  • Hazards of asbestos and health effects
  • Planning and preparing for asbestos removal
  • Methods of isolation of the work site
  • Carry out asbestos removal process
  • Decontamination
  • Clean up work site
  • Contribute to and use documentation in line with regulatory requirements

Course Inclusions

  • We supply all equipment necessary for you to undertake training
  • Training conducted by experienced industry experts
  • Plenty of practical hands on training

Mandatory Prerequisites

  • Participants must be at least 15 years of age
  • All participants must hold CPCCOHS1001A - ‘Work safely in the construction industry’ obtained after 11 May 2009 OR CPCCWHS1001/CPCWHS1001 - ‘Prepare to work safely in the construction industry’. This is commonly known as a ‘White Card’.
  • If you do not provide this by the business day prior to your course commencement, your enrolment will be cancelled, and you will not be permitted entry to the course. If this occurs, our terms and conditions will apply and therefore your course fee will not be refunded nor held in credit.
  • NOTE: If your White Card was issued prior to 11 May 2009, we cannot recognise this as a valid prerequisite as it does not prove that you were assessed against the correct unit of competency.

  • If you need to obtain or renew your White Card, this can be done with us at low cost prior to your training day - see our White Card course here.

  • Your trainer was informative, amusing, helpful and an all round engaging trainer. He clearly communicated the course content and expected outcomes. I personally find it rare to enjoy classroom activities but the 5 days with this trainer was definitely the exception. My normal way of thinking and looking at problems were challenged and questioned for the better, I feel more capable in my role as a HSR and look forward to putting the knowledge and strategies into practice.
