What is changing?

Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (TAE40116) is changing to TAE401222.

Why is the TAE40116 changing?

All qualifications are reviewed every 5 years in response to changes in industries. The TAE40116 course was due to be updated in 2021; however, due to COVID disruptions, it was delayed until 2022.

I hold a TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Can I use this to train and assess moving forward?

Yes. The TAE40116 is superseded by and equivalent to the TAE40122. The Standards for RTOs 2015 have kept the same requirements. If you currently meet all of the requirements in the Standards, you will still be able to train and will not be affected by this release.

I hold the TAE40110 and the 2 additional units required to train and assess under the Standards for RTOs 2015. Can I use this to train and assess moving forward?

Yes. The Standards for RTOs 2015 have kept the same requirements. If you currently meet all of the requirements in the Standards, you will still be able to train and will not be affected by this update.

What is the difference between TAE40116 and the new TAE40122?

The TAE40116 qualification has 10 units - 9 core and 1 elective.

The new TAE40122 has 12 units - 6 core and 6 electives providing greater flexibility for learners.

I want to complete a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Should I wait for the new TAE40122?

Not necessarily. You can complete the existing TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment course, which meets the current standards required to train and assess in a VET environment.

I’m enrolled with Pinnacle to do the TAE40116 and have partially completed my course. Should I transfer to the new TAE40122 or complete the course I am in?

Pinnacle recommends that you continue to complete your current course. The TAE40116 is equivalent to TAE40122 at a qualification level.

ASQA has advised you have until 9 December 2024 to complete the qualification. This communication can be found here.

Will Pinnacle offer an upgrade option?

Whilst the qualification is equivalent, many of the individual units are not equivalent. For this reason, Pinnacle will not offer an upgrade option.

However, we will instead offer the new TAE40122 qualification later in 2023.

When do the changes come into effect?

The new TAE40122 has been endorsed by Skills Ministers and uploaded to the national register in December 2022 and can now be accessed at training.gov.au.

A two-year transition / teach-out period will apply. This concludes on 9 December 2024.

I hold the TAE40110 qualification. Can I upgrade to the TAE40122 qualification?

The TAE40110 qualification is not equivalent to the TAE40122.

You can apply for Credit Transfer for equivalent units if you hold them. However, you may need to attend training in additional units of competency to complete your qualification.

If I currently hold the TAE40110 qualification, what are my options to meet the qualification requirements for a trainer and assessor in the Standards?

According to the Standards, you could either:

1. complete 2 of the additional units of competency from the options specified in the Standards for RTO’s 2015;
   
   
2. complete the TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment within the teach-out/transition period; or
   
   
3. complete the new TAE40122 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. Credit transfer and/or recognition of prior learning (RPL) options may be available for each of the above 3 options.
