Course Overview

Our nationally recognised electrical safety training course is designed for non electrical workers who are required to undertake non electrical work safely near live electrical apparatus. These competencies will not allow any electrical work to be conducted by non-electrical personnel, however it will educate them on the risks and dangers.

This course is a recognised prerequisite for UETDRMP007- Performs Rescue from a Live Low Voltage Panel. If you are completing this course to meet the prerequisite, please ensure you allow 5 days for marking and certificate issuance.

Course Outline

The key areas covered by this course include:

  • Basics of electricity, including voltage, current and resistance
  • Short circuits and the effects of short circuits, including arcing, arc flash and step and touch potential
  • Effects of electricity on the human body
  • Relevant legislation, standards and codes of practice related to working near live electrical equipment
  • Electricity networks and assets, including overhead powerlines, underground cables and switchboards
  • Definition of low voltage and high voltage and how to identify the voltage of an asset
  • How to identify electrical hazards, assess risks and apply control measures
  • Safe working practices when performing duties in the vicinity of live electrical apparatus
  • Requirements for safe approach distances and safety observers
  • Emergency procedures and responses when people, equipment or plant contact electricity

Participants are required to complete both theoretical and practical observation assessment activities. The practical observation assessment activities require participants to provide video evidence of activities undertaken in a simulated workplace environment.

Each Trainee Must Provide

Participants must:

  • Have at least a Year 10 level of numeracy, literacy and communication skills
  • Have the ability to read and write English Have access to video recording equipment - i.e. webcam, phone, etc.
  • Have access to one volunteer to assist with your practical assessment (the volunteer must be 15 years of age or older and consent to being filmed for assessment purposes)
  • Have access to personal protective equipment, objects to simulate an overhead powerline and objects that can be used to mark out a safe approach distance to complete the practical assessment
  • Have a stable internet connection
  • Use a device that can play sound and meets the minimum System Requirements of Pinnacle’s e-Learning system. We officially support and recommend modern desktop or laptop computers running Google Chrome web browser. Other personal devices (e.g. phones and tablets) may be compatible, but due to the variety available, we do not officially support these devices.

The hands on practical component was excellent with three car bodies to practice on giving us plenty of training on extraction techniques. Ashley provided a great learning environment with plenty of real life examples delivered with a very good teaching style.
