Students who are deemed competent will receive a Statement of Attainment recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework. This certification is nationally recognised. The Statement is issued by Pinnacle Safety and Training (RTO 40496).

Course Overview

This nationally recognised course equips participants with the essential skills and knowledge to work safely within a rail corridor. The course covers critical safety precautions for accessing rail corridors, identifying hazards, and distinguishing between safe zones and danger zones. Participants will also learn how to respond effectively to changing local conditions and various emergency situations, ensuring they can operate safely and competently in this high-risk environment.

How does this course relate to the RIW Card?

The Rail Industry Worker (RIW) Card is issued to rail workers who hold a nominated list of competencies, which vary based on the rail network operator. This course (Safely Access the Rail Corridor) is a mandatory requirement for workers wishing to obtain a RIW Card for several rail network providers. We always recommend that when planning your proposed training, you speak to your proposed employer about their current training requirements.

Course Outline

This course covered the following topics:

  • Legislation relevant to the rail industry, including the Rail Safety National Law
  • The purpose and use of a safety management system
  • Roles and responsibilities within the rail industry
  • What defines the rail corridor
  • Identifying safe zones and danger zones
  • Track configurations
  • Types of functions of rail vehicles
  • Identifying components and structures within and around the rail corridor
  • Understanding to meaning of signs and signals
  • Common hazards and risks
  • Control measures used in the rail corridor
  • Electrical safety principles and practices
  • Processing for gaining access to the rail corridor
  • Communication and safe work practices
  • Recognising and responding to unsafe situations and emergencies

Course Inclusions

  • Our online course was built from the ground up by industry experts. It is designed to be easy to use, easy to understand and interactive.

Each Trainee Must Provide

Participants must:

  • Have at least a Year 10 level of numeracy, literacy and communication skills
  • Have the ability to read, hear and write English
  • Have a sound level of computer skills to navigate through the e-Learning course
  • Use a device that meets the minimum System Requirements of Pinnacle’s e-Learning system (we officially support and recommend modern desktop or laptop computers running Google Chrome web browser). Other personal devices (e.g. phones and tablets) may be compatible, but due to the variety available, we do not officially support these devices.
  • Have a stable internet connection.
  • Use a device that can play sound.
