Course Overview
This Occupational First Aid course provides participants with the advanced skills and knowledge needed to manage medical emergencies in the workplace, particularly in situations where professional medical assistance may be delayed or where they are responsible for overseeing first aid services and resources.
This hands-on course builds on basic first aid and focuses on managing patient care during complex incidents until emergency services arrive. Participants will gain practical experience in advanced resuscitation techniques, oxygen therapy, airway management, and the use of AEDs, spinal collars, and spine boards. The course also covers the management of eye, head, and abdominal injuries, occupational illnesses, and psychological emergencies.
Training includes remote area first aid, monitoring vital signs, administering workplace-appropriate medications, and responding to hazards in high-risk settings such as confined spaces. Participants will also learn how to record and communicate patient information accurately while supporting workplace health and safety compliance.
Course Outline
Day 1 - Provide First Aid
Covers essential knowledge and practical skills to respond confidently to a wide range of first aid situations. Key areas include casualty assessment and management, CPR, treatment of common injuries and medical conditions, use of first aid equipment, and effective communication with emergency services. The course also addresses legal responsibilities, hazard assessment, and the psychological impacts of providing first aid.
Day 2 - Advanced First Aid
Builds on foundational skills covered in day 1 to prepare participants to manage more complex and high-risk first aid situations. It covers advanced casualty assessment, triage, and CPR techniques, as well as the management of severe bleeding, crush injuries, internal trauma, and childbirth. Participants will also learn safe casualty movement, respond to substance abuse incidents, and carry out post-incident reporting and evaluation in line with workplace requirements
Day 3 - Advanced Resuscitation
Focuses on the skills and knowledge required to provide effective resuscitation and oxygen therapy in line with workplace requirements. Participants will learn to safely use oxygen and suction equipment, manage airways, monitor vital signs, and respond to life-threatening situations. The course also covers first aid equipment maintenance, casualty management, incident reporting, and post-incident debriefing and evaluation.
Reaccreditation
First aiders should attend training on a regular basis to refresh their first aid knowledge and skills and to confirm their competence to provide first aid. Refresher training in CPR should be carried out annually and first aid qualifications should be renewed every three years.
